About Us

Institute for Vegetable Crops is a research institute accredited for scientific work. There are 6 organizational units at the Institute:

The research work is carried out by ten PhDs and two researchers, doctoral candidates. Their work focuses on genetics and breeding of vegetable species, physiology and agro-chemistry of vegetables, seeds, phyto-pathology and protection of vegetables from diseases, pests and weeds. Research programs are focused on solving current problems of cultivation of various vegetative species, preservation and testing of genetic pug and closer look to the specifics of certain vegetable species. The results of the research are new knowledge and new methods that can be applied in the process of vegetable production, new approaches in selection and seed production and, most importantly, new varieties and hybrids of various vegetable species. The Institute is best-known for varieties and hybrids of pepper and tomato that find their place in the market, not only in Serbia, but also in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Belorussia, Romania, Montenegro, Italy and Albania.

Researchers present the results of scientific work at scientific meetings in Serbia and abroad. By participating at international scientific conferences or during several months of specialization, the Institute is represented in many countries around the world. Researchers of the Institute are involved in national and international projects, and cooperation has been established with numerous scientific research organizations, faculties, colleges, agricultural expert services, the Government and relevant ministries, as well as foreign embassies and international institutions.

The largest item in the Institute's income is the sale of seeds of vegetable assortment created by the team of researchers of this institute during many years of work.

The Institute has around 140 hectares of arable land with irrigation system. A part of the arable land is under greenhouses and plastic houses which helps setting different views in controlled conditions, selection and production of hybrid seed of tomato and pepper.

There are four laboratories within the Institute: biotechnological, vegetable protection, chemical and quality testing and control.

The Institute has the necessary machinery for the production of seed and mercantile crops of various vegetable and fruit species, a warehouse for storage of seeds, machines for processing and packing of seeds.

The Institute established and constantly improves its quality management, which is in line with the latest ISO standard. By applying this standard the Institute carries out scientific research activities and experiments in biotechnology at more professional level. The quality management system is in the function of the Institute's continuous efforts to connect vegetable production with the latest results of scientific research as professionally as possible.

Our ultimate goal is a satisfied customer - vegetable producer.

The expertise and promptness of the existing scientific research staff, laboratories, library, full-day free internet access are at the disposal to chosen young people who decide to improve their knowledge in the field of vegetable production at the Institute.

Since 1946 to the present the Institute has brought out a great number of researchers who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of vegetable growing in our country, either by writing their scientific papers or by creating new varieties and hybrids of vegetable plants.

Bearing in mind all the facts mentioned above, the number of vegetable varieties created and their placement on the market, the Institute for Vegetable Crops is one of the leading scientific and seed institutions in the field of vegetable breeding in Serbia.
